Objective: To investigate the impact of the digital economy on the green development of Iran's sports industry with the moderating role of data marketization.
Methodology: This study employs a hybrid approach combining spatial econometrics (Spatial Durbin Model), machine learning, and Spatio Temporal Graph Neural Networks (ST GNN) on panel data of 31 Iranian provinces from 2012 to 2025. Variables include the Green Sports Index (GSI), Digital Economy Index (NQU), Data Marketization Index (DATA), and control variables.
Findings: The digital economy has a significant positive effect on green development, but this effect is conditional upon the level of data marketization and operates in a non linear, complementary manner. Spatial spillover variables are the most important predictors, accounting for about 25% of the total effect. Spatial clusters indicate that development is concentrated in central and northwestern provinces (Tehran, Alborz, Isfahan), while southern and eastern provinces (Sistan Baluchestan, Hormozgan, Ilam) lag behind. The ST GNN model achieved an R² of 0.78, but due to the limited sample size, the SDM is preferred for policy inference.
Conclusion: Policymakers should focus on simultaneous investment in digital economy and data infrastructure, regional policy coordination, and leapfrog programs for underdeveloped provinces to achieve sustainable green transformation of the sports industry.
